The Ground Remembers begins with the idea that the past sits just beneath the surface. We rebuild and move forward, yet what came before continues to shape what follows.
In this work, the fabric is handled like land, opened, excavated and carefully repaired until forms begin to rise from within it. It reflects on South Africa’s history of mining and extraction, and on the labour and pain that remain embedded in that ground.
At the same time, I am drawn to the idea that the earth also carries its own medicine. From soil that has been cut into, roots still grow. Healing and harm exist together. The ground remembers, and it also restores.
